Home Owner’s Insurance: Protect Your Home Before Leaving on Vacation With These Tips

With summer just around the corner, you’re probably starting to think about upcoming trips and adventures that you plan to take. June through early September are huge travel months for people in central Pennsylvania, and that means they are likely to be away from their residences for periods of time.

Whether you expect to leave your home for a weekend or a few weeks, it’s essential to protect your home from burglars while you are on vacation. To help you prepare to come back to a happy house, we offer these tips for protecting your home.

Get a House Sitter

Are you going to be traveling for a week or longer? It may make sense for you to hire a trustworthy house sitter. Not only can the house sitter handle basic tasks around your home, such as making sure the plants are watered and lawn is cut, but they also will make it look like someone is always around. That’s less appealing to thieves who would rather burglarize an unoccupied residence.

Have Someone Bring in Your Mail and Packages

A red flag to burglars that you’re not around are the mail items and packages piling up outside. If you don’t get a house sitter, at least have someone collect all your mail on a daily basis, such as a friend or neighbor. You can also have the post office hold all your mail for a specific amount of time.

Leave the Lights on During Times You Would Be Home

Even if you can’t be at your house, you can make it look like you’re at home by plugging some of your lights into automatic timers. This gives the impression someone is there in the evening. Some people like to add a softly playing radio, too, so sounds emanate from the home.

Have Someone Move Your Cars

Thieves aren’t stupid, and they know if your two cars in your driveway haven’t moved for a week, you’re probably not around. Ask someone to move them for you to give the illusion people are coming and going.

Get the House Insured

Home insurance is critical, just in case you are the victim of a home invasion. A comprehensive home insurance package is a safety net that can keep you from losing money as a result of thievery and/or damages.

Your ultimate goal should be a vacation that’s worry-free. One way to achieve this objective is with the right kind of home protection pre-planning. Then you can simply leave and enjoy your journeys.
